CYBER-MISOGYNY The internet is a hostile environment to women. How? They face both direct and indirect forms of misogyny online: Sexual Harassment: Revenge porn: The sharing of sexual content without the consent of the person in it . Unsolicited nudes: Women receive unsolicited photos of male genitals. Rape threats: Despite the severity of these threats, men rarely face repercussions for making them online. Harassment campaigns: Gamergate: An organized campaign by male gamers to harass feminist critics of video games, including death and rape threats. Female political figures: In the 2020 political election, Kamala Harris faced a sexualized disinformation campaign. Female political figures face constant online harassment. Manospheres: A term used to refer to online male communities in which misogynist beliefs and content circulate. Incels (involuntary celibates): An Internet term to refer to men who take out their anger on women for not having sex with them. Social media: Manospheres thrive on social platforms such as Twitter, Reddit, and 4chan among others. Why is this important? Whether covert or overt, women have to face a disproportionate amount of harassment and dehumanization online in both direct and indirect forms. It is time to start recognizing that the internet has become a space for misogynists to freely abuse women. We can be aware of the many forms of misogyny online and take action to make the Internet a welcoming space for women. Let's make the internet a safer space by being aware.
